What is a Brazilian Wax

What is a Brazilian Wax? A full Brazilian wax is a type of hair removal procedure that involves the complete removal of pubic hair, including the hair on the inner lips (labia majora and labia minora) and around the anus. Who is it for? Brazilian waxes are on the table for most people. Those who have certain skin concerns or conditions may want to avoid waxing altogether. This is mostly due to the unpredictable nature of how waxing will affect your skin if you are navigating life with psoriasis, eczema or a skin concern and diagnosis that causes your skin to be more tender or irritated. What are the benefits of a Brazilian wax? Long-Lasting Results: Waxing pulls hairs out from the root, so it takes longer to grow back compared to hair removal methods like shaving or sugaring. Smoother Skin: Because waxing pulls hairs out from the root, this hair removal method doesn't leave your skin covered in razor bumps or susceptible to ingrown hairs (especially with proper preparation for your Brazilian wax). Waxing also has exfoliating benefits and removes dead skin cells for softer, smoother skin. Finer Hair Texture: Once you start waxing regularly, your hair will grow back thinner and softer in-between appointments. Waxing should become less painful over time, and you should be able to go longer between appointments after you've been waxing regularly for some time. Cost-Effective: Waxes last longer than hair removal methods like shaving or trimming, so you end up spending less money on services and supplies over time, and any type of wax appointment (including a full Brazilian wax) will be at least four times less expensive than a single laser hair removal appointment. Suitable For All Skin Types: Waxing is an inclusive hair removal option for individuals with every skin tone and hair colour (from fair complexions with blonde or red hair to dark brown or black skin tones with dark hair). While effective, laser hair removal caters to a limited clientele and is only recommended for individuals with lighter skin tones and brown or dark hair colours. What’s included? It Includes removing pubic hair from the front, upper thighs, and butt. Based on your personal preference, you can leave a small strip of hair, a triangle, or square on the front. The Downsides of a Brazilian Wax; Other than the discomfort you may feel during treatment, other side effects include redness, discoloration, bumps, and ingrown hairs. These should subside in one to three days. We wouldn't recommend a Brazilian wax to those who have very sensitive skin, anyone on medications like oral retinoids, and those undergoing chemotherapy or radiation. Will it hurt? Unfortunately, a Brazilian wax does come with some pain as you are waxing a very sensitive area to begin with. But the pain will be different depending on the person. The good news: there are ways to mitigate the discomfort. You can take a pain reliever like acetaminophen (a.k.a Tylenol) about 30 minutes to an hour before getting your wax. Remember, it will be over before you know it. Being fuzz-free is so worth a couple minutes of discomfort! How to Prep; Before booking that waxing appointment, you'll want to make sure there's enough hair on your pubic area to be removed. You'll want to aim for hair follicles that are about a quarter to a half-inch long (the size of a grain of rice). You'll also want to gently exfoliate a day or two before to prevent ingrown hairs. If you happen to be on your period on the day of treatment, you can still go through with treatment just notes that there may be increased sensitivity to pain during your menstrual cycle as your hormone levels shift and a greater chance of inflammation. It's a good idea to plan accordingly. After-Care; Avoid saunas, hot baths, rigorous workouts, or anything that might make the skin too hot for the first 24 hours. We suggest wearing loose clothes and cotton underwear as any friction from tight clothing might cause irritation. You'll also want to avoid direct sunlight and exfoliation on newly smooth skin for at least 48 hours. How long does waxing last? You can expect a Brazilian wax to last between three to six weeks, depending on your hair growth pattern. For upkeep, we recommends scheduling follow-up appointments every four to six weeks.
